GM8 Suggestion Box

Since September of last year, a certain topic on the YoYo Games forum has grown considerably and is now the hot topic of discussion for the whole community. The topic? Features YoYo Games should include in the next release of Game Maker. Many of the suggestions are well thought out and in many cases should cut-down on game development time and improve functionality considerably.

For example: Kyle_Solo, the topic’s author, suggests that Game Maker should include features such as zooming in the room editor. This would make it possible to accurately position objects easily and detect those almost unnoticeable problems such as small gaps between wall sprites. Kyle also highlights the fact that even simple changes can really save a lot of time and mistakes from happening such as expanding the number of undo actions in the sprite editor. Another feature of interest that Kyle mentioned is the addition of a particle effects resource that includes a visual effects particle generator with a preview window.

One feature Kyle posted later on was the introduction of an object template system, allowing one to create a new object from a basic template that includes the basic functions of that object type (e.g. basic movement, hover/mouse over effects for button template), and perhaps the option to create your own templates to use at a later date or in another project.

Kyle was not the only one to contribute some interesting ideas, out of the 70 people who posted in the topic, here are just a few that are definitely worth further consideration:

  • Block based code editor in which sections of code (such as a loop, if statement, etc.) can be retracted or expanded to help keep the code clean, easy to read, organized and simple to follow. This feature is already found in many other programming languages / code editors. (lap1994)
  • The ability to easily view array and data structure contents through the debugger (Chaos In …)
  • A way of automatically opening the help file and displaying exact function you requested help on (rather than the current method of opening the help file and using the search/index feature to locate the page with the function on it, and then scrolling through the page / using the find tool to locate the details of the function.) (icuurd12b42)

On the other hand, not everyone’s ideas were on par with the others and probably need a bit of re-thinking…

  • “GG (Game Genarator this makes the game for you and you don’t need to do any work but you can’t claim the game as your own and say that you made it and you can’t sell it if it made the game for you)”
  • Spell check for the sprite editor
  • “a 3d button like switch to 3d or something like that”
  • “just click 2 create mode so it’s really everything you can do in d&d and code or anything else you can do in d&d entirely… make models with just a few clicks of your mouse”

Leave a comment, and let us know what you think the next version of Game Maker should have.

  1. I’d like to see bigger icons and support for multiple sizes

  2. well i always had 1 wish, and that’s better sound support! things like frequency, more effects and more filetypes. sounds are very important in games, it adds the feel you know.

the gm5 had crappy support, gm6 had a lot better support but lost some functions due to the loss of openGL

  3. I dislike most of the ideas, as they are just a waste. Although Game Maker’s motto is “easy game creation,” half of this stuff makes it too easy. Plus, object templates can easily be achieved by use of parents or scripts. The only ideas I like is the particle resource (I don’t feel the need to write 50 lines for a particle system I use for a second, then need to write a few more lines to destroy it) and the icon sizes.

  4. I personally, believe that the “Show Information” box in the object editor should be editable, copyable, and paste able. So that you can edit the whole object in one code block.

  5. The ability to have multiple code editor windows open at once [so I can keep track of my globals]. Also, SDI, or tabbed documents. Allowing “CTRL+A” in the sprite name window so I can select all, then start typing to erase the existing “spriteXX”.

I am sure I can come of with some more 😉

  6. I would like a 3d editor and faster 3d and the ability to switch between openGL and DX 7, 8, 9 and 10.
btw… Linux port would be very nice. (Compiled Gm games too?)

  7. The thing I would enjoy most would be a “Preview Loop” button in the background resource form that shows the background looping. (If you get what I’m saying, touch your head.) 🙂

  8. Another feature that I would like would be to make the runner program separate from the maker so that you can make a button to push when you right click on an icon that runs the game. (If you get what I’m saying, touch your elbow) 🙂

  9. security against decompilers would be good…

  10. […] As for GM8, Sandy made it quite clear that it will NOT be released within the next 12 months, making this a good time to post an idea in the GM8 Suggestion Box […]

  11. Game Maker NEEDS 256 level transparency. At the moment, Game Maker has 2 levels of transparency. Transparent or Not.

This is terrible! GIMP and Photoshop have 256 by default!

  12. .png file supoport!1111

And it needs to have a Macintosh and Linux port.
(I know they are working on a Apple port for Gm8)

  13. WTF? lol, the ending bracket was replaced by a smilie!
    I meant to say:
    …Apple port for Gm8 )

  14. For scrolling shooters i’ve noticed that when you go Up and Left (x-=5, y-=5) you can’t create an object, such as a bullet, to shoot. Maybe fix this glitch in GM8.

  15. Hey! I can see my name from here! My idea is good, my idea is good, woo hoo woo hoo ^^

  16. “…half of this stuff makes it too easy”
Is there such a thing? 🙂

“…object templates can easily be achieved by use of parents or scripts…”
The complete noob to GM doesn’t know or even care about parents or scripts. If they could make a platform game by simply selecting a “platform game character” template, it would help them do what GM is made to do, make games.

“For scrolling shooters i’ve noticed that when you go Up and Left (x-=5, y-=5) you can’t create an object, such as a bullet, to shoot. Maybe fix this glitch in GM8.”
That’s not a bug with GM, that’s an issue keyboards have. They can’t register Up, Left, and Space all at the same time. Try “x-=5; y-=5; instance_create(x,y,obj_test)” and you’ll find it works.
