Mark Resigns (AF)

Note: This was an april fools joke, hope you got a good laugh out of it

Today is a very sad day for most of us. The man whom we’ve labelled the creator of Game Maker for eight years has left the Game Maker development team indefinitely. Mark Overmars said he will be making an announcement on the matter this upcoming Tuesday.

Mark is currently a professor at a university in the Netherlands, and has been for some time. Over the years Game Maker has exponentially grown, now with dozens of thousands of users. Unfortunately, this means it has become more and more difficult for Mark to find time to continue development on Game Maker, while still making commitments to his school and students.

In a private consultation with Mark, we were told that Yo Yo Games was formed with the intention of gradually shifting over Mark’s position as the CEO of the Game Maker Company and distributing it amongst a team of highly skilled individuals who had the same corporate vision as he did. After spending hours and hours of his time trying to find and locate the right people for the job, he formed the Yo Yo Games team with Sandy Duncan (former head of Xbox Europe) as the new chairman. The plan, Mark says “is to have the new Yo Yo website operational and then announce [his] farewell on Tuesday.” He wants to assure users that he has every confidence that Game Maker’s development will run just as smoothly whilst he is gone.

You may notice the uses of the word “indefinitely.” You may ask, what exactly does indefinitely mean in this case? From what we understand, Mark Overmars will still hold a large share in the Yo Yo Games company and will not ‘disappear’ completely. He will still foresee that the Yo Yo Games team lives up to its expectations and continues the development of Game Maker as planned, but will no longer actively participate in developing the Game Maker software nor will he be providing support and website updates. The reason his decision is indefinite is he still has hopes of one day returning to what he considers as a second home.

On a further note, today is April Fools day in Scorptek-ville, got ya?

  1. Are you serious??
I can’t believe this! If it is really true, then a whole hearted farewell to Mark. Thanks to him for making me understand my true nature as a programmer (GM is one of my first programming languages). I hope he checks in the GMC (or future community) when he has time.

What?!! You… ya you got me. That made my heart skip several beats.

  3. I knew this was going to happen. If this is true, say goodbye to the good, cheap Game Maker we know and look forward to a bloated poorly coded version 8. I mean, they worked for Microsoft! Have you used Vista!?

  4. Oh, it’s an April Fool’s joke :p

  5. What a joke. I’m laughing to death…
Actually I thought this is true… I wouldn’t do such a joke in the current situation. If Mark would leave Game Maker… well, to be left alone with YoYo is not a good feeling…

  6. Well, it was gonna happen sometime.
I hope Mark has a good life, and that he checks the GMC
    regurarly.

  7. Wow, love the way half the people here think this is serious. Haha…

  8. Ha. I was like “Oh s***…”, and then I saw the date :P.

Actually it is (or was). Just take a look at the emails you recieved from Mark when getting your registration key and such, they are clearly signed “The Game Maker Company.” Also, Mark made references to the “company” on the website (now all changed to Yo Yo Games).

  12. lol i hate april fools day.

  13. That was very funny. I looked at the first paragraph, said “when did this happen?”, looked up at the date (April 1st – very suspicious), skipped down to the last line, then laughed at the people who didn’t read the all of it and actually believed it.

I also check the GMC for an April fools day joke. This is what I found:

Thats a sorry excuse for a company then.

  18. Aww man, i wish i saw this on the 1st, then i could have laughed at you for wasting your time writing it.

  19. Chronic’s right. Complaining won’t help it. Anyway, as in the past this will pass.

  20. It was pretty funny…seems the GMC Mods are pretty uptight about this place speaking their mind.
